I was diagnosed almost a year ago, although there had been some blood prior to that for a couple of years...I thought it was supplement mixes for the gym causing troubles....but alas, no. My diagnosis of ulcerative Colitis or more succinctly sigmoid proctitis....either way the diagnosis has been life changing....

I am a 17 year old female who got diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in May 2009. Many of my friends didn’t understand what I was going through and it was very hard to keep up in school! I had the hardest time coping and understanding this disease. I found that with the help of others, who have colitis around me, it makes it easier and I like the communication. I’m still struggling to this day but I’m hoping for healing! |

I first heard of esophageal cancer when my mother was diagnosed with this. We knew nothing of this cancer except that it was too late to do anything when it was discovered. She slowly starved to death. Then a few years later I got a phone call from my Aunt asking me about my mother's symptoms. Sadly, my Uncle (mother's brother) had them too. I knew this would be bad news. My mother had been a regular smoker and had even beat lung cancer. Her diet had not been the healthiest either. My uncle was completely the opposite. He never drank or smoked, played golf regularly and ate healthy. He was a retired doctor, lived in southern sunny USA. This leads me to believe that hereditary factors play a big part in this cancer. |

I was recently diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus. My research showed that this could develop into esophageal cancer. I was worried that I would die. I spoke with an expert and was reasurred that the chances of my developing cancer were rare especially if I used the medication as prescribed and followed a healthy lifestyle (no smoking, healthy weight, exercised) I can control this condition and expect to live a normal life. He also suggested that I be sure to have regular endoscopies to check for any changes in the cells of my esophagus.
