Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG)

The Canadian Digestive Health Foundation (CDHF) is the official foundation of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG), an organization of over 1,100 professionals including adult and pediatric gastroenterologists, surgeons, pediatricians and researchers. Funds raised by CDHF are dedicated to developing and delivering public education and awareness initiatives and supporting research conducted by CAG members.

The CAG has had a longstanding focus on physician education and Canadian research related to gastrointestinal health and disease. Educational initiatives for physicians include the annual Canadian Digestive Diseases Week conference as well as many other medical education programs, inclusive of educational programs for medical students. The CAG annually produces clinical practice guidelines, consensus reports and position statements, and since 2002 has been the national body accrediting gastroenterological education, as appointed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

In 1992 the CAG launched an extensive research program, in collaboration with the Canadian Institute of Health Research, to promote excellence in Canadian GI research. The program provides over $2 million annually for gastrointestinal research and offers training opportunities to postdoctoral fellows, clinicians, trainees and students. As a result of this program, many young scientists have advanced to secure faculty positions at Canadian universities and to become mentors to the next generation of researchers.
